The film opens with U.S. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) attending a summit in Kazakhstan where he announces that the United States will no longer negotiate with terrorists. After the summit, Marshall boards Air Force One with his wife Grace (Wendy Crewson) and daughter Alice (Liesel Matthews). On the plane, Marshall is informed that a group of Russian terrorists led by Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman) have hijacked another plane and have threatened to blow it up if the President does not order the U.S. to withdraw its forces from the Middle East.
The President refuses to comply and orders Air Force One to fly to Moscow, where Korshunov has demanded the President to meet with him. Meanwhile, the terrorists have taken control of Air Force One and have taken the President’s family hostage. Marshall is able to escape and hide in the cargo hold with the aid of his chief of staff, Lloyd Shepherd (William H. Macy). With the help of his Secret Service agents (Dean Stockwell and Paul Guilfoyle) and a few passengers, Marshall is able to regain control of the plane and eventually land it safely in Moscow.
The President is then taken to a secure location in Moscow and is able to negotiate a deal with the terrorists, allowing him to return to the United States with his family. However, before he can leave, Korshunov and his men storm the President’s safehouse and take him and his family hostage once again. Marshall is then forced to board Air Force One and fly to a rendezvous point in Kazakhstan. Marshall is able to regain control of the plane once again, but not before Korshunov and his men are able to kill most of the passengers and crew. In the end, Marshall is able to land the plane safely and is reunited with his family.
