In March 2009, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. announced that they would co-produce Flight. Zemeckis was set to direct the film from a script by John Gatins, with rewrites by Billy Ray and Christopher Monger.
Washington was cast in the lead role in July 2009. In October, Don Cheadle joined the cast as Whip’s friend and colleague, Hugh Lang, while Bruce Greenwood signed on to play Whitaker’s father.
Reilly was cast in November 2009, followed by John Goodman and Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon in December.
Principal photography began in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 25, 2010. In February, the production moved to Miami, Florida. Filming concluded in April 2010. The film was shot with a Red One digital camera.
Flight: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released on November 6, 2012, by Paramount Records. The album features music composed by Mark Isham.
Jonny Greenwood’s original score for the film has not been released and is presumed to be lost.
Flight opened in limited release in North America on November 2, 2012, before opening wide on November 2, 2012. It was originally set to open in late October 2012, but Paramount Pictures postponed the release date to November 2, 2012.
On its opening weekend, Flight was the #1 box office draw with $24.9 million. : According to exit polling, the film primarily appealed to an older audience; 67 percent of its audience was over the age of 35.

The story is based on the true story of airline pilot William “Whip” Whitaker, who became a hero after landing a damaged airliner.
